Żmij

Dawno temu w Obornikach mieszkał pewien chciwy starosta.

– pomyślał i zeskoczył z konia. Chciał poznać

piękną nieznajomą i ją zdobyć. Nagle dziewczęta zniknęły w trzcinach, a po chwili odleciały stamtąd trzy łabędzie. Zdziwiony starosta wrócił do konia. „Jutro muszę z nią porozmawiać” – postanowił.

Następnego dnia przybył nad Wartę wcześniej i się ukrył. Gdy w południe słońce stanęło wysoko na niebie, przyleciały trzy łabędzie, zrzuciły pióra i oczom zdumionego starosty ukazały się trzy dziewczęta.

– Siostro, pilnuj piór – przestrzegała najstarsza najmłodszą. – Gdy je zgubisz, w ludzkiej postaci zostaniesz. Dziewczyny wskoczyły do wody, a starosta obmyślał plan. Wiedział już, które pióra

do najmłodszej należą. Trzeciego dnia, gdy tylko łabędzie przybrały postać dziewcząt, wyskoczył z ukrycia i zabrał pióra najmłodszej. Ujrzawszy to, starsze natychmiast przemieniły się w ptaki i szybko odleciały. Najmłodsza jednak została.

– Błagam, oddaj mi pióra i pozwól odlecieć!

Pióra zaś do skrzyni schował. „Mam ją pod dachem, piękną i młodą – pomyślał. – Moją być musi!”.

Potem zaczął ją przepytywać:

– Pani o delikatnym głosie, powiedz, komu jesteś poślubioną?

– Wypuść mnie, panie, to cię nic złego nie spotka. Jeśli jednak zatrzymasz mnie siłą,

poznasz gniew mego męża. Dwór twój lichy i szybko spłonie – zagroziła.

Lecz starosta ani myślał wypuścić nieznajomej. Dwór kazał rozebrać i zamczysko w jego miejscu wymurować.

Zabrali się ludzie do pracy. Fundamenty z kamienia formowali, ściany i blanki z drzewa stawiali.

Ten zalecił, by przeorać ziemię dookoła zamku i wypowiedzieć zaklęcie, a magiczny krąg powstrzyma choroby. Tak też uczyniono, a starosta wojów na straży postawił, by pilnowali okolicy.

Aż nadszedł dzień, gdy zaszumiało, zagrzmiało i pod zamkiem stanął ogromny smok, żmijem zwany:

– Mości starosto! – ryknął. – Oddaj mi żonę! Inaczej spalę miasto i zamek.

Lecz chciwy starosta wyśmiał go tylko. Wtedy żmij wymruczał zaklęcie:

Domowe ogniska, domowe świeczniki, podpalcie domostwa, spalcie Oborniki!

I miasto w jednej chwili stanęło w płomieniach. Ale starosta się nie ugiął. Wysłał wojów, aby żmija zabili, lecz żaden nie wrócił.

Drugiego dnia smok ponownie stanął pod zamkiem:

– Mości starosto! Oddaj mi żonę! Inaczej zatopię miasto i zamek.

Starosta kazał łucznikom strzelać do żmija, lecz strzały odbijały się od grubej skóry potwora. A on szeptał

zaklęcie:

Z Warty i Wełny niech wystąpią wody, niech zaleją miasto i narobią szkody!

I wezbrały dwie rzeki, a powódź zalała rynek, resztki domostw i podtopiła kościoły. Wieczorem wody ustąpiły, odsłaniając budzące grozę straty.

Trzeciego dnia żmij stanął pod zamkiem:

– Mości starosto, oddaj mi żonę! Inaczej ściągnę chorobę na miasto i zamek! Wysłali oborniczanie posłańców do starosty z błaganiem, by krzywd już im nie przymnażał i by spełnił żądanie.

Opuścili zrujnowane Oborniki i wysłali skargę do króla. Wtedy starosta zrozumiał, że jeśli nie żmij, to król go zmusi, by wydał dziewczynę. A jeszcze ukarać gotów. W zamku zamieszkali kolejni starostowie i stopniowo rozbudowywali gmach. Warownię upodobali sobie królowie polscy, a Władysław Jagiełło nawet posłów krzyżackich tutaj przyjmował. Żmij długo czekał na zemstę. Kiedy wojska szwedzkie napadły na miasto, podszepnął dowódcy, aby zamek rozebrał. Żołnierze rozdeptali magiczny krąg zaoranej ziemi. Drewno spalili w wielkich ogniskach, a kamieniami wybrukowali rynek. Z czasem resztki zamku przestały istnieć, jednak pamięć o nim jest wciąż żywa.

Of the Starost of Oborniki Who Abducted the Dragon’s Wife

Long ago, there lived in Oborniki a certain greedy starost. He was constantly quarreling with the village headman and the townspeople. As a royal official, he was supposed to send taxes to the royal court, but he often took more than he should have.

One morning he set out on horseback for a ride. Spring had just begun. In the fields, farmers were preparing the soil for sowing, and shepherds were driving animals out to pasture. The noise of daily life spread across the land, for Oborniki was bustling with activity. The year had begun well. The starost expected large tax profits. And since he also had to protect the royal forests from poachers, he rode toward the woods.

The sun was already setting and work in the fields had ceased when he returned to his manor. Tired, he went to sleep. The next day, as always, he was to make his rounds through the area. During one of these rides he noticed bathing maidens in the forest by the Warta River—one more beautiful than the next! He stopped, just about to call out, when he caught sight of the third one, the youngest. His heart began to pound, his throat tightened, and he could not utter a word.

“She shall be my wife!” he thought, and jumped down from his horse. He wanted to meet the beautiful stranger and win her. Suddenly the maidens vanished into the reeds, and a moment later three swans flew out from there. Astonished, the starost returned to his horse.

“Tomorrow I must speak to her,” he decided.

The next day he arrived by the Warta earlier and hid himself. When at noon the sun stood high in the sky, three swans flew in, cast off their feathers, and before the amazed eyes of the starost appeared three maidens.

“Sister, guard the feathers,” the eldest warned the youngest. “If you lose them, you will remain in human form.”

The girls jumped into the water, and the starost began devising a plan. He already knew which feathers belonged to the youngest. On the third day, as soon as the swans took on the form of maidens, he leapt out of hiding and snatched the youngest one’s feathers. Seeing this, the older sisters immediately turned back into birds and quickly flew away. But the youngest remained behind.

“I beg you, give me back my feathers and let me fly away!”

“Become my wife!”

“I cannot, for I am married to another,” she replied. “You would not wish to know who he is, but my husband has great power and will not allow any harm to come to me.”

“I am not afraid. I am the royal starost of Oborniki. Be my wife!”

Before the girl could answer, he seized her in his arms, leapt onto his steed, placed her before him, and returned to the manor. Then he locked her in a chamber. As for the feathers, he hid them in a chest.

“I have her beneath my roof, beautiful and young,” he thought. “She must become mine!”

Then he began to question her:

“Lady with the gentle voice, tell me, to whom are you wed?”

“Set me free, my lord, and no evil will come to you. But if you keep me here by force, you shall know my husband’s wrath. Your poor manor will quickly burn,” she warned him.

But the starost had no intention of releasing the stranger. Instead, he ordered the manor torn down and a castle built in its place.

The people set to work. They shaped foundations from stone and raised walls and battlements of wood. Fearing fire, the starost ordered clay to be packed between the wooden walls, for it held moisture well. The stronghold, growing day by day, drew the attention of townspeople and travelers alike. People said the starost must be hiding a great treasure, since he was fortifying himself so heavily. He explained that it was in case of war, or to defend the town against demons and devils.

The wind carried these tidings far away. A few days later an unknown woman appeared in nearby villages. She asked about a beautiful girl, but no one had heard of her. After the stranger departed, misfortunes struck the area. Meanwhile, the witch kept searching farther on.

Alarmed, the starost consulted a wise man about what should be done to protect the stronghold from pestilence. The sage advised that the ground all around the castle be plowed and an incantation spoken, and that a magic circle would keep illness at bay. So it was done, and the starost posted warriors on guard to watch over the surrounding land.

Then came the day when rushing and rumbling were heard, and before the castle stood an enormous dragon, called a żmij.

“Noble starost!” he roared. “Give me back my wife! Otherwise I shall burn the town and the castle.”

But the greedy starost only laughed at him. Then the dragon muttered an incantation:

Household hearths, household lamps,
Set the dwellings alight, burn Oborniki down!

And in a single instant the town was in flames. But the starost did not yield. He sent out warriors to kill the dragon, yet not one of them returned.

On the second day the dragon again appeared before the castle.

“Noble starost! Give me back my wife! Otherwise I shall flood the town and the castle.”

The starost ordered his archers to shoot at the dragon, but the arrows bounced off the monster’s thick hide. And the dragon whispered his spell:

Let the waters of the Warta and the Wełna rise,
Let them flood the town and bring great ruin!

And the two rivers swelled, and the flood covered the market square, the remains of the houses, and half-submerged the churches. In the evening the waters receded, revealing terrifying devastation.

On the third day the dragon stood before the castle once more.

“Noble starost, give me back my wife! Otherwise I shall bring disease upon the town and the castle!”

The people of Oborniki sent messengers to the starost, begging him to stop bringing further misery upon them and to grant the dragon’s demand. But he paid no heed to the voice of his subjects and would not surrender the girl.

Then the dragon whispered:

Let a great pestilence fall upon the town,
Let death the cleanser pass through the villages!

Terrified, the inhabitants began to fall ill. They abandoned ruined Oborniki and sent a complaint to the king. Then the starost understood that if the dragon did not force him, the king would—and might punish him besides.

So he released the woman and returned her feathers. He himself gave up his office and, in shame, left Oborniki. The dragon took back his beautiful swan-wife and returned to his own land, resolving that one day he would avenge the humiliation he had suffered.

Years passed. New starosts came to live in the castle and gradually expanded the building. The stronghold became favored by the kings of Poland, and Władysław Jagiełło himself even received Teutonic envoys there. The dragon waited a long time for revenge. When Swedish troops attacked the town, he whispered to their commander to have the castle dismantled. The soldiers trampled the magical circle of plowed earth. They burned the wood in great bonfires, and with the stones they paved the market square. In time the last remains of the castle ceased to exist, yet its memory is still alive.

„Erlauchter Starost, gib mir meine Frau zurück!

Tkackiej, a w 1517 r. Od 1757 r. przejęli go dziedziczni właściciele dóbr obornickich. Jeszcze w XVIII w. został on jednak rozebrany.
